Biography

Awatif Al-Malki is a Saudi visual artist and designer based in Riyadh. Her work centres on painting the Two Holy Mosques and on Arabic letterforms and manuscripts, and includes large-scale murals and exhibitions in Saudi Arabia and abroad.

Artist statement

A Saudi visual artist and designer, she has made art an expressive language and a parallel life that gives her peace and freedom from the noise of the world around her. Her passion springs from a deep belief in the power of the brush to give form to human feeling.

Her artistic vision shows in an exceptional devotion to documenting and painting the Two Holy Mosques. From their sanctity she has drawn spiritual and visual dimensions that reach beyond the edges of the canvas, carrying the beauty and radiance of Islamic architecture to the world. She has also turned to Arabic letterforms and manuscripts, and to painting poems and the Mu‘allaqat.

Throughout her career she has given form to this passion in major murals and in solo and group exhibitions in Saudi Arabia and abroad, seeking to leave a visual mark that touches the heart and enriches the cultural scene. She has also worked in silk painting and fashion design. Her own studio in Riyadh is a refuge of calm, and she regards art as life for the soul.
