Biography

Maysa Suliman is a Saudi contemporary artist whose practice explores collective memory, inherited cultural structures, and the traces left by time, pressure, and passage. Working primarily through abstraction, she builds tactile surfaces by hand using gesso, acrylic, and mixed media, repeatedly layering, sanding, erasing, and rupturing the material. Her work draws from customs, traditions, and cultural memory, examining tensions between fragility and resilience, silence and expression, giving and boundaries, and what disappears versus what remains.

Artist statement

What disappears does not always leave.

Maysa Suliman’s practice explores collective memory as a living force shaped by time, inheritance, pressure, and transformation. Through abstraction, she examines how customs, traditions, and inherited structures move through individual and collective experience, leaving traces that persist even as their forms change.

Her process is physical and accumulative. Layers of gesso, acrylic, and mixed media are built, erased, fractured, and rebuilt by hand. These actions allow the surface to carry its own history: pressure becomes a mark, removal becomes a trace, and rupture becomes part of the work’s formation.

Across her practice, Suliman investigates states of passage and the tensions that accompany them—fragility and resilience, silence and expression, giving and boundaries, individual will and inherited structures. The work remains suspended between disappearance and persistence, returning to a central question: What remains after erasure?
