About the Work

Before cities became memory, the soil was already writing.

Written by the Soil draws from Diriyah and Wadi Hanifah, where heritage lives through layers of human presence, nature, and time. The earth becomes a material archive, holding traces of what has passed through its colors, textures, and changing forms.

As details recede, the memory of place emerges, revealing what remains beneath the passage of time.

Perhaps the earth does not tell its stories as we do; it leaves them as traces.

About the Artist

Maysa Suliman

Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia

Maysa Suliman is a Saudi contemporary artist whose practice explores collective memory, inherited cultural structures, and the traces left by time, pressure, and passage. Working primarily through abstraction, she builds tactile surfaces by hand using gesso, acrylic, and mixed media, repeatedly layering, sanding, erasing, and rupturing the material. Her work draws from customs, traditions, and cultural memory, examining tensions between fragility and resilience, silence and expression, giving and boundaries, and what disappears versus what remains.
